Borehole from Abandoned Coal Mine Overwhelms Sulfur Creek
A view of Sulfur Creek in Adams Township, Cambria County below the Village of
Dunlo and immediately downstream of one of the 8 major
deep mine discharges in the Little Conemaugh Basin.
The borehole discharge has been measured at up to 1700 gallons per minute.
The discharge is from deep mines abandoned many years ago.
The pH of the water is below 3.4 and it has iron concentrations of up to 145 mg/l,
Manganese of up to 19 mg/l and Aluminum up to 25.4 mg/l.
The Project
The Ebensburg Regional Office of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental
Protection Bureau of Mining and Reclamation, the Cambria County Conservation &
Recreation Authority and the Cooney
Bros. Coal Co. have recently embarked on a cleanup program of Sulfur Creek.
The Authority has acquired ownership of the tract. The PADEP Mining Office
has with the volunteer help of DaMariscotta (a Clarion, PA Consulting Firm
specializing in the design of passive amd treatment systems) has developed a plan for remediation of the
entire Sulfur Creek watershed. The borehole shown above is the largest problem.
Cooney Bros. Coal Co. has begun limestone trenches and ponds which will test the
treatment configuration on approximately 10% of the discharge. If the treatment
is succesful for a one year period a larger scale system will be constructed.
This project represents the first attempt in the area to apply passive treatment
techniques to large borehole discharges. If this "experiment" works, we can
have clean rivers.
